My Plan to Truly Raise ALL MMSD kids.
I’m running for the Madison School Board with a clear and bold vision: setting higher expectations for what our schools can achieve while ensuring every student and teacher has the resources to succeed. Many say they are going to help all kids but only focus on their tribe behind-the-scenes. I am open to everyone: All races, abilities, political leanings, genders, national origins etc. etc. My platform focuses on real, measurable results—not vague promises. I will develop and publicize measurable goals after I dig deeper into MMSD’s data. Here’s my plan to foster schools where every kid has a real chance to succeed.
Let’s Raise Our Own Expectations.
1. Helping Every Student Win
Every child deserves the chance to achieve great things. I will champion teaching methods that work and build classrooms where every student feels included and supported. There is clear and consistent evidence that inclusive educational settings can confer substantial short- and long-term benefits for students with and without disabilities.
Unified Classrooms: Implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Integrated Comprehensive Systems (ICS) across the district to eliminate barriers between Special and General Education.
Actionable IEPs: Simplify Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to focus on each student’s strengths and challenges while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
Advanced Learners: Combining Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Integrated Comprehensive Systems for Equity (ICS) supports advanced learners by creating inclusive, equitable learning environments that offer flexible, challenging opportunities tailored to individual learner needs, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and academic growth within heterogeneous classrooms.
2. Supporting Our Teachers
Teachers are the backbone of our schools. We must invest in them so they can focus on teaching and inspiring our kids.
More Support in Classrooms: Hire additional Special Education Assistants (SEAs) and co-teachers to lower student-teacher ratios and enhance targeted support in inclusive classrooms.
Better Training: Provide teachers with advanced training in UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and ICS (Integrated Comprehensive Systems to equip them with the tools they need to meet diverse student needs.
Empowering Teachers: Reduce administrative burdens and increase planning time so teachers can focus on what they do best—teaching.
3. Smarter Spending for Better Outcomes
We need to make every dollar count, ensuring resources go directly to students and classrooms.
Redirect Spending: Cut outdated programs and excessive administrative costs, and invest those funds in classroom support, technology, and inclusive curriculum materials.
Transparent Budgeting: Introduce accountability systems that show exactly how every dollar improves student outcomes.
4. Ambitious Measurable Results
I am committed to achieving the following ambitious measurable outcomes within three years:
Academic Improvement: Increase test scores in core subjects by TBD%.
Higher Graduation Rates: Raise graduation rates by at least TBD%.
Stronger Sense of Belonging: Boost student and teacher engagement and belonging survey results by 20%.
Reduced Disparities: Lower disciplinary actions for marginalized students by TBD%.
5. Curriculum and System Reforms
A robust and inclusive curriculum is essential to student success.
Challenging and Accessible Curriculum: Align curricula with UDL principles to provide lessons that are both rigorous and accessible.
Individualized Learning Paths: Create flexible learning options tailored to each student’s needs, strengths, and goals—whether through IEPs, advanced learning opportunities, or additional supports.
